Three days of workshops, a celebratory dinner, and a live demonstration with Ohara Sub-Grand Master Jose Salcedo in his first visit to Central Ohio.

This year’s Special Event Series with Jose Salcedo includes several new features for Central Ohio Shibui, including multi-day workshops, phased registration access, a community celebration dinner, and a live public demonstration.

If you have questions about the event series, this is the best place to start.
Jose Salcedo, First Master and Ohara Sub-Grand Master, is coming to Columbus this summer for a very special series of Ohara Ikebana events hosted by the Central Ohio Shibui Study Group.
This multi-day event includes:
Participants may register for one or more workshop days and are warmly encouraged to join us for the dinner and Wednesday evening demonstration.

Jose Salcedo is one of the most respected senior Ohara teachers in North America, with nearly four decades of study and teaching experience.
He began studying Ohara Ikebana in 1988 with Grand Master Reiko Kawamura, began teaching in 1997, and continues to teach weekly classes in California. In 2023, Headmaster Hiroki Ohara granted Jose the honorary title of Ohara Sub-Grand Master.
Jose is widely admired for his encouraging teaching style, thoughtful critiques, and ability to help students deepen both their technical skills and artistic expression.
In addition to his Ohara studies, Jose is also an accomplished teacher of Ikenobo Ikebana and Urasenke Tea Ceremony.

Students may register for one, two, or all three days.
The workshops will be held at:

The class will be divided into two groups based on certificate level and prior study:
All students will observe both lessons each day, allowing everyone to benefit from Jose-sensei’s teaching. However, each participant will create only the arrangement assigned to their group.
The workshop series is designed to support both developing and advanced students. Each day includes two lessons organized into Foundations and Advanced Studies groups, allowing participants to study at an appropriate level while still observing all demonstrations and critiques throughout the day.
Time: 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM each day
Cost: $165 per person, per day
Lunch included
Lesson arrangements may be adjusted based on seasonal material and container availability.
As we get closer to August, registered participants will receive a short survey asking about:
Participants will also be notified whether they are assigned to the Foundations or Advanced Studies group.
Join us for a relaxed evening celebrating Jose-sensei’s visit, the continued growth of Central Ohio Shibui, and the achievements of members receiving Ohara School certificates.
Central Ohio Shibui and its members have so much to celebrate and be thankful for, and we are excited to share that joy with the broader community that supports and appreciates Japanese traditional arts.
This special dinner is open to workshop participants, demonstration attendees, spouses and partners, friends of the Study Group, and others who share an interest in ikebana, Japanese art, and Japanese culture.
We especially welcome friends from the broader Japanese cultural community, including practitioners of other ikebana schools, bonsai enthusiasts, tea practitioners, calligraphy artists, and others who appreciate the beauty, creativity, and community surrounding Japanese traditional arts.
